Why and How to Keep Your Elevator Pitch Fresh

Why and How to Keep Your Elevator Pitch FreshWhy and How to Keep Your Elevator Pitch FreshWhen you were fresh out of college looking to break into the financial world, you probably heard about developing an elevator pitch - a succinct explanation of who you are, what you do and where youre headed. The trick is to present yourself within 30 to 60 seconds in such an engaging fashion that your audience is completely sold on you and offers you that dream job.Having worked successfully in the world of accounting and finance for a while now, you might think that your need for an elevator pitch has come and gone. Think again. As secure as you may feel in your current position, you never know when you might encounter the chance of a lifetime. Whats more, youll never hear about that chance if you dont have a quick way to let new contacts know about you. Having an updated, engaging elevator pitch at the ready is the perfect way to take advantage of an encounter that could lead to a new and ex citing opportunity.Getting it all in thereYour experience is what makes you more valuable, but its hard to boil it all down to an elevator pitch. Updating your resume is great way to start, but you need to condense the information even further. Narrow your experience down to a short, bulleted list of accomplishments. But dont stop there. Focus on how your experience and skill set benefits your employer now and where you want that experience to take you in the future. Skip the jargonYour financial acumen makes you attractive to a wide range of potential employers, so dont block them out by using industry-specific jargon or buzzwords in your pitch. Because youre experienced in your field, you might not even notice youre throwing around these insider terms. Test your pitch out on friends from other fields to see if your words trip them up.Face-to-face interactionIf your financial experience has been in the back office, you might need to brush up on your one-to-one conversation skills. The last thing you want is to fumble through your pitch when the 30-second moment of truth comes your way. Practice with friends or even video your pitch. And then get out for some networkingKeep up with the latestOnce youve caught someones interest, he or she might want to discuss areas outside of accounting and finance. If you ordinarily just scan industry berichterstattung sources to the exclusion of other business topics, try broadening your scope. If you know youll be in a specific social setting, you might familiarize yourself with appropriate topics beforehand.Be prepared for the end gameHave a game plan for how you want to exchange contact information if you meet someone youd like to stay in touch with. Some people prefer business cards, so make sure you have one. Others like to exchange information electronically be ready for that scenario too. Also, if you have an online portfolio of work, make sure its updated and readily accessible on your tablet. Its another way to keep your elevator pitch fresh.Ready to try out your elevator pitch in the job market?SEARCH CONSULTING JOBS

10 Horrible Boss Stories You Wont Believe Are True

10 Horrible Boss Stories You Wont Believe Are True10 Horrible Boss Stories You Wont Believe Are TrueMost of the anfhreres Ive known are reasonably fair-minded. Not perfect, of course, but definitely with their hearts in the right place. Some bosses, however, have a real mean streak that makes their employees miserable.A while back, I co-hosted a radio program called Funny Business. We asked our listeners to tell us their mean boss stories. Here are the 10 that stood out.1. Be Sure to Get Refundable TicketsAfter I got engaged, I went to my boss to schedule time off for the wedding and honeymoon, which were still more than a year away. My boss said I dont know if thats a good time for you to take vacation days. Well just have to wait and see.2. Get Your Priorities StraightMy son was born very premature, the weekend before a big meeting for which I had been helping my boss prepare. On Monday, I came to work to tie up a few loose items, and to tell my boss about my son, who at that point was in the ICU. Looking up from his screen, my boss said Dont let your personal life interfere with your job. It can only hurt you professionally.3. Neatness CountsI recently wrote a justification to buy a new PC. It had to be approved by my boss. Unhappy with my writing style, my boss rewrote the justification to show me how it should be done. After it was finally written properly, he turned it down.4. I Love Rock and RollI was refused a raise by my boss, who said, Youre already making more money than I was at your age. It turns out that he spent his youth touring around the state playing guitar in a garage band, barely making enough to pay for food and gasoline. When I pointed out that, rather than playing guitar, I had spent my youth getting a college degree and working in a high-tech job, he replied, Whats your point?5. A Little Extra MotivationMy doctor advised me to lose a few pounds and get more exercise. After I mentioned this to my boss, he emailed me a motivational image of a fashion model babe with my face and hair. A month later, when I gave notice, he emailed me the image of a pig with my face on it.6. Did I Forget to Mention? On Monday, my boss approached me at 4 PM with an emergency assignment. He had an important meeting early the following morning and needed a new version of a 400-page document. I worked all night, made the updates, and left the manual on his desk well after midnight. When I came to work the next morning, I asked his admin about the emergency meeting. She said He canceled it and took a vacation day.7. Exercise Is Good For Youur boss asked me and my colleagues to spend two weeks preparing detailed building and capital improvement wish lists to plan our facilitys budget. When I asked when we might see the improvements, our boss said, Oh- your wish lists are just that. Dont expect anything you requested to actually get done. It was just an exercise8. Dont AskOur boss concluded a quarterly all-employee meetings by asking if there were any questions. Silence. He said, I keep holding behauptung meetings, and no one asks any questions. I would like someone to ask a question. One brave soul raised his hand and asked a question. The boss said, Well, if you had been listening to what I just said, you would know the answer to your question. Next question.9. Ah Now I UnderstandOur company was running into financial difficulties so my boss asked me to work for half of my salary. I said, Well, since Im paid for 40 hours a week but working 80, I suppose I could work 40 hours a week and only get paid for only 20 of them. He said Thats not what I meant. I want you to work 80 hours a week, but Im only going to pay you for 20 of them.10. Please PrioritizeMy grandmother unexpectedly died from heart failure and I took off two days to go to her funeral. The day I got back, my mother called me to say my grandfather had died of grief. Obviously upset, I approached my boss and explained the situation. She said Unfortunately, you have no bereavement time left. You should have planned better.Readers Can you top any of these stories? Eye Examination and Glasses in Air Force Basic Training

Eye Examination and Glasses in Air Force Basic TrainingEye Examination and Glasses in Air Force Basic TrainingGood eyesight is obviously important for Air Force pilots and other personnel. But even if you need prescription eyeglasses to see, you can still be accepted into the Air Force. Dont plan to wear contact lenses, though. The Air Force doesnt allow them during basic training and discourages their use in the field. Heres what to know about eyeglasses and the Air Force. Air Force Basic Training Eye Exam When recruits arrive at Air Force Basic Military Training, they undergo a complete eye examination. This is different and more involved than the eye examination they undergo at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS,), which is to determine if a recruit meets the basic vision requirements to join the military. The eye examination at Air Force basic training is to determine whether a new recruit needsglasses, and- if they do, to order government-issue glasses and eyegla ss inserts for a gas mask. Glasses and Contact Lenses During Air Force Basic Training You cannot wear contact lenses during basic training. You also cannot wear your civilian glasses, once you have received your official government-issue glasses. In the past, government-issue glasses had thick, hard plastic frames, with thick, hard plastic lenses which were very difficult to break. However, the Air Force realized that a majority of recruits were throwing these glasses away, or throwing them into a drawer after basic training because they were uncomfortable and unappealing-looking. The Air Force now offers recruits a variety of eyeglass frame choices. Once you receive your government issue glasses (a few days after your eye examination), they are the only glasses you are allowed to wear while at basic training. If you dont really need glasses to see, you wont be required to wear them. Why Cant I Wear Contact Lenses in the Air Force? As you may have gathered, wearing contacts i s discouraged in the military. There are a variety of reasons, but one serious concern is exposure to tear gas. Contact lenses can be badly damaged and deteriorate if exposed to some gases, which could lead to long-term eye damage over time. In addition, contact lenses require a hygienic environment for their care, and conditions in the field may not lend themselves to adequate care. This can lead to abrasions and infections, as it would in a civilian who did not regularly clean or change his contact lenses. Eyeglasses After Air Force Basic Training After graduating frombasic training, Air Force recruits (now airmen) are allowed to wear their civilian glasses again, as long as they conform to military dress and appearance regulations. Generally, that means the color must be conservative, no designs or decorations on the framesand no tinted lenses when indoors, or outdoors when in military formation. Be advised that even after basic training, while in uniform, airmen may not wear their glasses around their necks (on lanyards) or on top of their heads, per Air Force uniform requirements. Of course, this only applies when wearing a military uniform. When an airman is in civilian clothes, he can wear whatever glasseshe chooses once hes out of basic training.

5 Ways You Unwittingly Punk Your Candidates - Spark Hire

5 Ways You Unwittingly Punk Your Candidates - Spark HireWhen bewerbungsinterviewing for your company, it often can feel as though the ball is in the candidates court when it comes to first impressions. However, with todays limited talent pool, it is key that you are focused on making a good impression on candidates as well. There are five common interviewing mistakes that I have seen hiring managers make in the past. Each of these mistakes can quickly turn top candidatesoff to you and your company.1. Being LateAs the hiring manager, its more than likely the case that YOU scheduled the time and place for the interview. Do yourself a favor and stick to the time and place.I have seen hiring managers late for interviews, causing a candidate to wait while they have risked their current job to request time off in order to interview. Talk about leaving a bad taste in a candidates mouth causing them to be an hour or more late to their current position and waste valuable time. Please be respec tful of the candidates time.2. Poor Organizational SkillsNothing screams unorganized more than a hiring manager who shows up for an interview without preparing. Before the interview, be aya to have reviewed the candidates resume and above all, make sure that you remember the candidates name.3. Inappropriate DressJust as you expect candidates to dress to impress for the interview, the expectation stands firm for you as well.Leave your sweats and flip-flops at home, even if your business culture is relaxed. Let the candidate see that you are professional by the way you dress and carry yourself.4. Lack of FocusIf you have scheduled an interview for a certain time and place, make sure that you have eliminated any possible distractions ahead of time. I know that everyone has their mobile phone glued to their hip today, but if possible leave your mobile phone in your desk drawer on silent. There is nothing quite as rude as being in an interview or meeting with someone while fielding phone c alls, text messages, and emails. This lack of focus tells the candidate that you are not interested.5. Unprofessional QuestionsWhen you are preparing for the interview, make sure that you have a list of questions based on the candidates resume and experience. It is very important that you ensure that these questions are appropriate and legal questions.Asking inappropriate questions during the interview can be a huge turn off for top talent. What are some things that you do when interviewing in order to make a good impression on top talent? Tips for Becoming a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model

Tips for Becoming a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit ModelTips for Becoming a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit ModelEvery year, 25 lucky ladies land in the pages of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Its one of the most- if not the most- anticipated magazine issues in the world and has launched the careers of dozens of supermodels. So what does it take to become a Sports Illustrated model? Here are a few key things you should know. What Kind of Models Are Sports Illustrated Models? Sports Illustrated models are classified as swimsuit models. And even though the magazine occasionally forgets to include the swimsuit part, bare body parts are always strategically covered. The photos are always classy, and the models are encouraged to be themselves, have fun, and pose naturally. They always look sexy without being overtly sexual. As Swimsuit Editor Diane Smith has said, its all about the perfect combination of beauty, athleticism, and personality. Does Sports Illustrated Hold Casting Calls? Yes, but not in the traditional sense. Every year, Sports Illustrated invites swimsuit hopefuls to Swimsuit HQ for their annual casting call- the key word here being invite. Aspiring Sports Illustrated hopefuls cant just fill out an online application and hope for the best. fruchtwein are invited from major modeling agencies around the world. So if you have your eyes set on the Sports Illustrated prize, your best bet is to work hard at your modeling career and get scouted by a top model agency in a major market like New York, which is where Sports Illustrated is headquartered. Make sure your agency is on board with your swimsuit plans and that theyre doing everything possible to promote you and help you achieve your dreams Do I Need to Sign With a Special Swimsuit Modeling Agency? No, you dont. In smaller markets, you might find modeling agencies that specialize in swimsuit models. But the major agencies in New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Milan who represent Sports Ill ustrated models dont have swimsuit divisions. Instead, their swimsuit models are represented within the agencys high-fashion, editorial and/or commercial divisions. Do I Need to Be an Experienced Model? No, but it sure helps. fruchtwein models work as high-fashion, editorial or fitness models for a while before booking a job with Sports Illustrated. Your best chance of getting noticed by Sports Illustrated is to be signed to a major modeling agency in a big market. Do I Need to Be Athletic? The Swimsuit Edition always features a few pro athletes, but the vast majority of the models arent Olympic stars or famous tennis players. Theyre just beautiful women with very healthy, and sometimes curvy, figures. While its not necessary to be super athletic you must be fit and a bit curvier than the typical super slim, waif-types who normally do runway modeling. Are Plus-size Models Accepted? Yes, however, it is rare. The first plus-size model to officially land a spot in the covet ed Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition welches Robyn Lawley in 2015. At 62 and a US size 11, she was also the first plus-size model to grace the cover of Australian Vogue magazine and the first plus-size face of Ralph Lauren. American model Ashley Graham, who is a size 16, also garnered a lot of buzz when she appeared in the magazine in 2015. But, she was a model in a paid advertisement, not featured in the issue itself. However, it just goes to show that Sports Illustrated is becoming more and more open to bodies of all shapes and sizes What if I Dont Make It? First, remember that only 25 models make it into the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition each year, and only a few of those are rookies. Its incredibly competitive, and it takes a very special model to land one of the spots. Luckily, there are plenty of other lucrative opportunities for swimsuit models, such as lingerie modeling, glamor modeling, petite modeling, showroom and fit modeling, and even parts modeling (hands, feet, etc.).

How to Ask Your Boss for Feedback (And Actually Get What You Need!)

How to Ask Your Boss for Feedback (And Actually Get What You Need)How to Ask Your Boss for Feedback (And Actually Get What You Need) I recently read an interesting stat from Price Waterhouse Cooper that indicated nearly 60% of polled employees said they would like feedback from their bosses on a daily or weekly basis. More interesting than that, for employees under age 30, the desire for regular feedback flow jumped to 72%.Being a CEO for nearly 20 years, and having managed millennial workers for a good part of that time, I agree with these findings. But what has bothered me for the longest of time is the fact that so few employees, millennials or bedrngnis, know how to effectively ask for feedback and then use that feedback constructively to improve their performance. Its important to the success of ones career trajectory to get constructive feedback frequently along the way. Feedback will help you meet expectations and avoid the miscommunications that waste every ones time and put your prospects for growth at risk.Ive found that employees who effectively solicit feedback from management, and implement that criticism wisely, inevitably end up becoming the top performers in their fields. So, based on my experience managing some of digital marketings most promising talents, here are my guidelines for getting and using the feedback that will open pathways to a bright, productive future.Im all for giving employees candid feedback about their performance, but I cant believe the ridiculous times and places I have been asked for it. Ive been asked while getting lunch on line at the local deli, during company holiday parties, at my desk after a sales call that didnt go so well, even while washing my hands in the lavatoryThe best way to solicit feedback from your manager is to platzdeckchen up a time with them and when they know thats the topic of the meeting. Email them. Explain that you want to make aya you are meeting expectations and looking for ways to improve your work performance. Ask for a 15 minute appointment when you can discuss it.Whatever you do, dont impulsively query your boss just because you run into them in a public space. Do not interrupt their day. Dont put them on the spot in front of others. Set something up ahead of time. And if they dont reply to your first email (trust me, bosses get A LOT of emails and its easy for some items to fall through the cracks) do a follow-up email a few days later, just to make sure they got your request. When the time comes to have your appointed feedback session, limit your discussion to three or four specific areas. These can be critiques about your core competencies, performance on recent projects or other opportunities where you can apply or expand your skill set. The idea is to keep things simple. Make your inquiry about performance clear and specific, not vague and general. At the same time, dont bombard your boss with a list of 20 items. That would be draining. Focu s on the several areas where you most want your managers input.Be sure to take notes during the meeting. Make it a listening session and concentrate on accurately transcribing your managers comments. Shortly after the meeting, while the discussion is fresh, follow up with an email. Be proactive. Outline the actions you are going to take to enhance your performance. Keep it succinct. And keep it strictly between you and your manager dont go copying Human Resources or your bosss boss with your email, unless specifically directed to by your manager.Too many times I remember having really positive and constructive feedback session with an employee, a meeting they initiated, only to never hear from them again. Its like they receive the feedback, but have no clue how to apply it to their work situation. Thats why its crucial to set up a timeline, so you can start tracking your improvement . Set a goal. Make it 30 days, the end of the quarter, by the end of a business initiative. Whatev er, but make sure you set a time frame. Consciously implement the areas of improvement identified during your feedback session and make a note of what did or didnt work for you. Then, after the time you allotted yourself, send your boss an email outlining your progress. Include specific instances when you stretched your skills or otherwise brought discussed improvements to the work process, and make note of the results.Having the feedback session is not the goal in itself. You must show your boss (and yourself) that you are capable of implementing recommended changes to your behaviors at work, and that those changes contribute positively to the larger enterprise.Ultimately, your goal should be to make feedback an ongoing process. In my company, we have forgone the typical 6-month review model many businesses follow. Those types of reviews can be intimidating, and theyre not frequent enough to catch bad habits before they form. Instead, we make providing feedback a fluid process th at can happen at any time. At the end of a project, at the end of a week. Its major part of our work culture to provide one another with instant feedback, whether its praise or constructive criticism. So whether your company has formal review times or no review times at all, make it your priority to solicit feedback, not only from your managers, but from your co-workers, clients and vendors. Make it a regular process and continuously shape your performance based upon the constructive criticism you receive.Gabriel Shaoolian is a career growth expert, former marketing executive with 20+ years experience, and Founder of DesignRush , a digital destination to inspire creativity, featuring best designs by industry, spotlight interviews with top designers, trends, events & breaking news.

Working With a Flexible Schedule - Definition and Guide

Working With a Flexible Schedule - Definition and Guide Working With a Flexible Schedule - Definition and Guide A flexible schedule allows an employee to work hours that differ from the normal company start and stop time. Particularly in an environment for exempt employees, those hours are generally 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. or 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and tallied, they total a 40-hour work week. (Any regularly scheduled work hours allow an extra hour for lunch whether the employee takes the time or not.) In the past, flexibility has meant that an employee might work 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. every day as an option that gave the employee an extra hour in the morning in exchange for losing an hour in the late afternoon. But, todays employees demand more from their employers and especially the Millennial employees. They require different options for flexible schedules and even flexible schedules that can change based on their need for flexibility in their lives at any given time. So, for example, an employee might want a flexible work schedule, not every day but on days when children have doctors appointments, when classrooms have parental helper opportunities, or when attending annual medical appointments for themselves. In a non-exempt workplace, often industrial, production, warehousing, or customer facing such as retail, medical caregiving, grocery, and service stations, a flexible schedule depends on the amount of interdependence required in the work. A nurse who works the afternoon shift will have trouble exercising flexibility, for example, if he cant find another employee to cover his shift. A flexible schedule is also dependent on employee availability to cover all aspects of the job and all hours of the day during which a business makes products or serves customers. Employer Expectations in a Flexible Workplace Environment In all flexible schedules, the employer expects a full-time employee to work the required hours or more. A flexible schedule involves either a compressed work week or flexible starting and stopping times. In a compressed work week, the most common flexible schedule is a four-day workweek in which employees work four ten-hour days. (Variations on this flexible schedule exist including twelve-hour work days but this is not recommended.) This flexible schedule allows employees to have an additional day for any activity that affords the employee more work-life balance. In a twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week operation, employees may choose to take Sunday. Monday, Tuesday off or any three days to meet their desired schedule. Employers will want to see that workstations are covered when they need to operate while still allowing employee flexibility. A daily flexible schedule enables employees to come to work early and go home early or stay late and arrive late or take extra time at lunch that is made up. In this schedule, employers may require that employees work core hours, from 10 a.m. â€" 3 p.m., as an example. Or, the employer may allow a flexible schedule that becomes the employee’s regular schedule, 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. every day, for example. This type of regular schedule that strays from the normal working hours is generally agreed upon by the employee and his or her manager. In the most flexible workplaces of all, employees come and go as they please  when they please. They are still responsible for performing a whole job and achieving the goals of their position. But, if they can achieve them with only 15-20 hours in the office and teleworking the rest of the time, more power to them. Making a Flexible Schedule Work In a typical  workplace, a compressed schedule or a daily flexible schedule, once agreed upon with the employees manager, the employee is expected to adhere to this schedule as his or her normal schedule. When the employee works hours that are different than the agreed upon schedule, the employee must keep the manager informed so that accountability exists in the schedule. Even in the most flexible schedule, that allows employees to come and go at will, or telework, employers must believe that the employee is putting in his time and accomplishing his goals. The quality and quantity of the work must also reflect the efforts of a full-time employee. In a flexible environment, trust is a significant factor. Measurable goals and clear expectations are also significant so the employer is comfortable with the employee’s ongoing contribution.   Important also to employers is the recognition by employees that a 40-hour work week is expected from exempt employees even when following a flexible schedule. This is important for employers to communicate and for employees to understand or a disconnect will cause tension and conflict between the employer and the employee. To ensure that these factors exist for employers who allow flex schedules, a firm set of guidelines should be implemented and employees trained before the adoption of a flex schedule. This will limit any confusion or uneven or unfair implementation across your organization.   A flexible schedule is one of the benefits that is most appreciated by employees- even more so by your millennial employees. The advantages when a flexible schedule is allowed, to both employers and employees, are key as you implement a flexible schedule. You can negotiate a flexible schedule. Find out how.

Standard Settings for Resume Margins

Standard Settings for Resume Margins Standard Settings for Resume Margins Little things make a big difference when you’re putting together a resume. Choices about formatting affect the overall impression your application makes on the hiring manager. Font choice and size, spacing issues, even settings for margins can all change the way your resume is perceived. Its important to use standard resume margin guidelines when formatting your resume. This way your resume will look professional and will be properly laid out on the page. What are standard margin guidelines? Read on for all the information you’ll need about margins, text alignment, and how to reduce margins if you need extra space. Standard Resume Margins Resume margins should be about 1-inch on all sides. You can reduce the margins if you need extra space, but do not make them smaller than ½-inch. If the margins are too small, your resume will look too busy. Why would someone be tempted to shrink the margins down smaller than ½-inch on all sides? To fit all their information on one page. Fortunately, most career experts now agree that it’s OK to retire the old rule that resumes should be kept to one page only. While it’s in your best interests to keep your CV snappy and to the point, if you legitimately need more than one page to show off your accomplishments, go ahead. The most important thing is that your resume contains only the information that’s relevant to the job posting and likely to catch the attention of the hiring manager. Tinkering with margins to fit more info in a smaller space won’t accomplish those goals. Resume Text Alignment You should also align your text to the left (rather than centering your text); this is how most documents are aligned, so it will make your resume easier to read. Typically, the left side of the resume contains the most important information, such as your previous employers, job titles, and your achievements and/or responsibilities. Resumes often contain additional information on the right side of the page, such as dates and/or job locations. This creates a visually balanced resume. Rules for Creative Resumes Thinking about mixing it up for your next resume draft? Think twice. Research has shown that 70 percent of employers prefer standard resumes, even for creative jobs. So while infographic CVs or video resumes might get a lot of attention from the media, they might not get you the interview you seek. Why is that? Well, in part it’s because most people are not skilled graphic/multimedia artists in addition to their many other professional skills. It’s harder than you might think, even with the technology available today, to make a creative resume that effectively communicates your message. More often, the bells and whistles merely detract from your qualifications. Beyond that, hiring managers are busy. Especially during the screening process, when hiring managers cull resumes that don’t meet basic requirements, they’re likely to spend only a few seconds on each resume before moving on. Make their job too hard, and they’re likely to go to the next candidate’s CV. (There’s also always the chance that some of your aesthetic choices in your creative resume will rub the reviewer the wrong way, for reasons of personal taste. You don’t want to miss out on an opportunity, simply because you love the color orange, and the hiring manager is more of a neutral palate person.) Finally, creative resumes have one big disadvantage: they’re hard for robots to read. If you’re submitting your application through an online process, you’re almost always better off to stick with the traditional resume format and a Word document or PDF. How to Adjust Page Margin Settings in Microsoft Word Heres how to adjust the margins in Word: Click on Layout / Margins / Normal (for 1-inch margins)There are a variety of other selections or you can set your own margins by clicking on: Layout / Custom Margins How to Adjust Page Margin Settings in Google Docs Heres how to adjust the margins in Google Docs: Click on “Help   Search the Menus” and type “Margins.” Select “Page Setup.” ;You can adjust all the margins (left, right, top and bottom) from this window. More Resume Tips When you have a choice, use standard settings for your resume format. That applies to margin sizes, fonts, and other formatting issues. Hiring managers are used to seeing 1-inch margins, for example. Stray from the formula, and you run the risk that they’ll notice your formatting choices and not the content of your CV â€" not your goal. The good news is that these choices are usually easiest to make: word processing software tends to come with these settings built-in.Remember that robots are even more finicky than human readers. If you apply for a job online, your resume will most likely go through an applicant tracking system. Use non-standard formatting, and it might never make it to human eyes. Review resume examples and templates before you get started. This will help you to see formatting choices in action, as well as providing you with some style options you might not have considered otherwise.

44% of employees approached about inappropriate attire

44% of employees approached 'about inappropriate attire' 44% of employees approached 'about inappropriate attire' We all know that it’s entirely possible to mess up in the personal style department at work. In fact, new research from staffing firm OfficeTeam showed that 44% of top managers have approached an employee because of “inappropriate” clothing. So it makes sense that style could also have a big influence on moving up the corporate ladder - a staggering 80% of managers and 86% of employees said they think that what you wear to work can impact your chances of scoring a promotion.Independent research firms surveyed two groups - more than 1,000 American adult office employees in addition to 300 senior managers and 300 HR managers at U.S. companies with 20 or more employees. Here are some of the points that stood out. What happens when you wear the wrong clothes to workWhile workers spend an average of 11 minutes daily picking out clothes the office, some people need to make better choices -  32% of managers say they’ve gone so far as to make someone go back home because of what the y wore. Those ages 18-34 spend more time choosing work clothes than any other group at 13 minutes daily on average, while those 55 and older spend the least amount of time at seven minutes daily on average.  Men spend an average of 12 minutes daily, while women spend an average of nine minutes.Brandi Britton, a district president for OfficeTeam, commented on the research:“Dressing professionally establishes credibility and helps others envision you in a role with greater responsibility,” she said. “While many organizations have relaxed their dress codes, especially for warmer months, employees shouldn’t assume casual attire or the latest fashion trends are OK for the office. It’s always a good idea to follow company policies and observe what colleagues in more senior positions typically wear.”So, what’s in and what’s out?Even though different groups spend varying amounts of time choosing clothes for work, it’s wise to  draw the line somewhere. The research shows tha t flip-flops,  tank tops, and shorts have fallen out of favor over the course of the last five years, among others, according to HR managers. But on the other hand, they say that tennis shoes, jeans, and leggings are among the clothing items that are “more acceptable” in office settings today versus back then.So while 67% of workers say they have a supply of clothes that are only for work, making the right choices could mean this difference between getting a promotion and failing to.

3 steps to a successful 90-day performance review

3 steps to a successful 90-day performance review 3 steps to a successful 90-day performance review The 90-day review should be respected but not feared. Human-resources specialists share secrets to a successful review.  HR departments at most large corporations have a formal 90-day performance evaluation in place for new hires. But even those organizations without formal processes often use that three-month mark to review your performance to date. The 90-day review should be respected but not feared, according to a trio of human-resources specialists I contacted on the subject. Here are their recommendations to prepare for job success and a strong 90-day performance review.1. Understand expectationsStep one begins as soon as you accept your new position. Make sure you and your supervisor are clear on what the organization expects from your performance in the first 90 days. You should be clear on the organization’s goals, objectives and expectations.“Keep the HR perspective in mind,” said Dr. Jane Goldner, an HR consultant who has held positions at Coca-Cola and Georgia Pacifi c in her 25 years in the field. “Human resources managers are asking themselves, ‘Did we assess this person’s skills correctly? Does she fit into our culture? Can we count on this person to be a future leader?’ ”Many organizations hire for skill only to realize that the candidate wasn’t the right fit, she said. For example, Goldner recalled a small company she worked with that hired a manager from a Fortune 100 company only to find that the manager was accustomed to a large budget and staff and struggled in the new role. “She became a turnover stat,” Goldner said.Culture fit might be one of several areas that your superiors will want to evaluate. Learning expectations from Day One will set you up for progress by Day 90.2. Break evenMarben Bland, a human-resources strategist in Pittsburgh, said that in his experience most managers “take more than they give” in the first 90 days.“Despite your work experience, you are most likely inexperienced in the culture and t he expectations of all the individuals you work with.”The goal for your first 90 days should be to “break even.”First, create goals of what you need to accomplish, whom you need to meet and what systems you need to master. As an example, Bland recalled working with a CFO who moved to a new company that used an accounting system he had never used before. “The CFO would not have been productive - taking more than giving - had he not become proficient on the system, which was old to the industry but new to him.”Second, identify easy wins that give you and your boss a sense of accomplishment. Bland cited a marketing manager hired by a midsized company that was doing business with his prior contacts. Since the marketing manager had existing relationships with his new company’s vendors, he was able to renegotiate more favorable contracts for the company based on his relationships - an easy win.Third, identify the problems you were hired to solve. Take steps to attack those problems in your first 90 days. You do not need to solve those problems completely in the period, but you must demonstrate action toward solving the issues, Bland said. It will accelerate the timeline where you can start “giving more than you’re taking.”3. Deliver a strong presentationPrepare for the 90-day meeting as you would a critical presentation, said Lisa Boesen, principle of Houston-based Talent Innovations Group.“Be results oriented,” Boesen said. “During the presentation, whether it’s an informal conversation or a more formal PowerPoint, review your objectives and quantify the results. Your supervisor wants to know the impact you have had on the organization. The better you can place a number on your results, the better impression you’ll leave.”Boesen cites her own experience as an HR trainer at a large company. It wasn’t enough to say, “I gave a training (session) for 50 people.” Instead her supervisor wanted to see accomplishments, so she quantifi ed the results, including the feedback she received and how successfully the participants in her training class applied what they had learned. After your 90-day performance review is complete, take the opportunity to build and enhance the relationships you have made by sending an e-mail or calling key stakeholders to summarize your first 90 days, thank them for their participation, and tell them about some of your future plans. First impressions count, and your first 90 days will leave an indelible impression on your new organization. Make your first review a winner.

A Free Checklist for Your First Day at a New Job - The Muse

A Free Checklist for Your First Day at a New Job - The Muse A Free Checklist for Your First Day at a New Job Starting a new job is exhilarating. And the opportunities are endless- a new chance to make an awesome first impression, new responsibilities to help you grow, new professional connections who could turn into friends, even a new (and clean) desk. But before you head to bed thinking all the fantasies, there are a few things you should do the night before your first day- that is, if you want to seriously impress and earn the respect of your new boss. And, because we’re feeling super generous, we made you this handy checklist so you don’t forget anything important. Just click File Download as whatever file you’d like to get started. 1. Lay Out Your Outfit You want to make a killer first impression (OK, maybe it’s not the first, but it’s still pretty important), so make sure your best outfit is ready to go so you’re not scrambling in the morning. But remember, this isn’t an interview- you already have the job. So, if you know the office is more casual, don’t be afraid to tone it down a bit. You’ll feel a lot more comfortable knowing you’ll be dressed like everyone else, rather than the one person wearing a full suit. 2. Set Your Alarm and Plan Your Commute Double check your arrival time, then set your alarm and plan your commute so you arrive 15 minutes before then. Trust me, you won’t be frowned upon for arriving early. 3. Figure Out Your Breakfast Situation It’s the most important meal of the day according to science! Make sure you start off on the right foot by preparing (or making) what you’re going to eat first thing when you wake up. 4. Collect All Your Documents Hopefully, HR has sent you a rundown of what you need to bring in, which may include a passport, photo ID, or other paperwork you need for employment verification. (If they haven’t, it’s still usually a good idea to bring these things regardless.) You can also do yourself a favor by refreshing yourself on what a 401K is and how health insurance works. 5. Pack Your Bag Then, make sure to pack all the essentials- a notebook and pen for taking notes, a sweater if the office is cold, a stain stick for spills, some money for lunch (yes, you should buy lunch your first day to get to know your co-workers!), and a snack in case lunch runs late or doesn’t happen. 6. Do One Last Bit of Stalking Names are hard to remember- which is why it’s smart to stalk your company’s team page or your new team members’ LinkedIn profiles one last time (yes, I know you did this before for your interview) to remember who is who and what they do. Then, collect the names of people you’d like to grab coffee with and get to know better (they don’t have to be in your department) your first few weeks. 7. Prepare Some Small Talk Topics You’re going to be doing a lot of small talking as you meet everyone, so if you’re on the shyer side, preparing some topics of discussion (the TV show you’re currently watching, what you did over the weekend, vacation plans) beforehand will save you from suffering through awkward pauses or blurting out inappropriate comments on your first day. 8. Collect a Couple Questions or Ideas You Have Even if you don’t know what to expect, you’re sure to impress your boss by being proactive and coming prepared with a couple questions about the company or department, or some ideas on projects you know your role entails. Here are a few to get you started. 9. Write Down One Reason You Took This Job This great tip comes from Muse writer Erin Greenawald, who suggests writing down the biggest reason you decided to take this job. “Then, when things get overwhelming, everything isn’t what you expected it to be, or you feel like you’ll never make it up the steep learning curve ahead of you, you can return to that reason and remind yourself why you’re doing this,” she says. 10. Get Some Sleep! I know you’re excited to start, but you’re going to want to be well rested to keep your energy levels high and stay focused on your first day. So, get to bed at a reasonable hour, and maybe try one of these sleep hacks so you get plenty of rest. Finally, on the big day, be yourself! You’re about to embark on a new career journey, and starting it off just as you are guarantees you’re headed in the right direction.

Importance of Health Insurance to a Benefits Package

Importance of Health Insurance to a Benefits Package Importance of Health Insurance to a Benefits Package Health insurance is the foundation of a comprehensive benefits package for employees. It is the preferred benefit of the majority of people who work. Health insurance marks an employer as an employer of choice when desirable candidates select job opportunities. Health insurance is an insurance policy that will pay specified amounts of money to cover medical expenses or treatments. Employer-provided health insurance policies, also known as group health insurance policies, offer employees many different options for insurance coverage. Employer-provided policies vary in their approaches to coverage According to Healthinsurance.org, of the Americans who have health coverage, nearly 60% obtain their coverage through an employer-sponsored plan. In these group health plans, the employer pays the premium, or the lions share of the premium, that covers a wide range of health care expenses that vary by policy. Generally, group health insurance plans cover the cost of medical office visits for illness and checkups, hospitalization, emergency room services, ambulance transportation, operations, physical therapy, and even prescription drugs, to provide several examples of potentially covered health care services. But, every plan is different and it behooves an employee to become familiar with the details of his or her employers plan  before the benefit is needed. Health Care Cost In recent years, because of health care cost increases, employees are paying an increased percentage of the cost of their health insurance premiums, usually through a payroll deduction. Some plans cover the employee who must pay the cost of insuring family members. Additionally, almost every plan has a co-payment (co-pay) responsibility in which the employee pays a nominal fee to cover a portion of the health care service provided, usually ranging from $10-40.00. In addition to reducing the cost of health care coverage for employees, the second advantage of an employer-sponsored plan is that they offer guaranteed coverage; the insurance company must cover all applicants whose employment qualifies them for coverage. Typically, employer-sponsored plans can include a range of plan options. From health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and preferred provider organizations (PPOs) to plans that provide additional coverage such as dental insurance, life insurance, short-term disability insurance, and long-term disability insurance, employer-sponsored health plans can be comprehensive to meet the insurance needs of employees. Changes Upcoming in Health Insurance Coverage In 2010, President Barack Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. It is anticipated that significant changes to health insurance plans, practices, and costs will occur as a result of this law. Various provisions of the health insurance overhaul law rolled out starting in 2010 through mid-decade. Certain changes  relating to coverage of children up to age 26 and people with prior existing conditions and more  have already taken place. More are predicted. Most employers are anticipating health insurance cost increases and impacts to employee health coverage. These impacts, at best, change and expand existing coverage and benefits, and at worst, may cause employers to no longer afford to offer an employer-provided health insurance option. No one is currently aware of the total requirements or impact of these far-reaching changes to health insurance provision and health care in the US. Health insurance is an appreciated employee benefit. Sought after employees will not consider accepting a job that does not provide health insurance coverage as an employee benefit. How to shut down a colleague that takes credit for your work

How to shut down a colleague that takes credit for your work How to shut down a colleague that takes credit for your work Has this ever happened to you? You’re in a meeting and the unthinkable happens: a colleague claims credit for your work.As you reel from the shock of what just occurred, your self-talk goes into overdrive. “How dare they. The audacity!” you say to yourself as you start to play out the consequences in your mind. “What does the rest of the team suppose my role was? Making the coffee?”But in the time it takes to come to grips with what just happened, something even more critical occurs: The moment passes. The team moves on to a new topic. The time for speaking up and publicly correcting the “mistake” has passed. Everyone “knows” who owned the accomplishment, and  it’s not you.Prevent it from happening againThere’s really only one sure-fire method of preventing this from happening, and it is to preemptively, publicly, claim credit for  everything  you do.At the Executive Women International Academy of Leadership conference last week,  Pulitzer Prize-winning journali st, keynote speaker (and all-around awesome lady) Fawn Germer  said: “If you don’t take credit for what you do, it is likely that someone else will.”To be completely realistic, though, I understand that are many very reasonable reasons why you may not be entirely comfortable doing this. And you are by no means alone. Later that day at the EWI conference I asked my class of 120 women (and one man) in my leadership workshop “Who here feels 100% comfortable promoting their accomplishments at work?” As is usual in such groups, only three or four individuals raised their hands.Publicly claiming credit for the work you do, also known as “tooting your own horn” is not comfortable for most people. Why? Here’s my theory: We’ve all worked with someone who overdid it and was always bragging about their achievements. In response to this, we say to ourselves “I never want to be that person” and cease claiming credit for our work â€" even in situations where it is appropriat e and necessary. But consider the consequences: Unscrupulous colleagues can seize the opportunity to claim credit, because you’d left it sitting on the table as though it was there for the taking. Now consider what feels worse: Proactively claiming credit for your major accomplishments, or having that credit taken by someone else. Hopefully, you can agree that promoting your achievements is the lesser evil.So mark each major milestone by stopping work and taking action to attach your name to the result. For example, make an announcement in a meeting or by email such as “Team, I just completed the financial modeling for this quarter and have begun work on next quarter. If you’d like have questions or would like to discuss the results or methodology, please let me know.”In theory, doing this consistently should shut down the likelihood of a colleague claiming credit, but of course in the real world, one might still slip through! If so, how should you respond? Here are three steps to decisively and diplomatically shut down a colleague who takes credit for your work.Step 1: Immediately set the record straightLet’s say it happens again. You’re in a meeting and a colleague, Kevin, claims credit for your work … again. What should you do?Whatever you do, don’t let the moment pass. It is important to speak up immediately, even if this means interrupting or speaking over the top of someone. If you feel flustered, try not to let it show. Smile, and aim to speak with  warmth and authority  in equal measure, and say “To clear up any misunderstanding, what Kevin is trying to explain is that we collaborated on this effort. He led the initial data gathering, while I devised the methodology and performed the analysis. ” Smile one more time, and then shut up.Why say it was a collaboration, even if it wasn’t? It is to help Kevin save face with the team, because the real conversation will take place with him privately, later. You don’t want to raise his defens es any higher than they already are. If you have thrown him under the bus now, you can forget about having a reasonable conversation later.Step 2: Follow up in privateLater, but not too much later, with your trademark mix of warmth and authority, approach Kevin privately and ask if this is a good time to discuss what happened. After you have his permission, tell Kevin that you respect his work and his contributions to the team, and that you won’t hesitate in future to praise him publicly for his contributions. Then with a tone of pure authority, say “But if you claim credit for my work again, I  will  set the record straight. Is that clear?” Listen carefully to what he has to say, but don’t be persuaded to back down from this very reasonable request.Close the conversation by thanking him for understanding and adding anything else you’d like to say to ensure there are no hard feelings.Step 3: RepeatWith that, the matter should be settled. But just in case it ever happens aga in, be on the alert and ready to speak up, firstly in public and then later in private, whenever someone else claims credit for your work, Kevin’s work or that of another colleague. If their behavior continues after multiple conversations, escalate your complaint to a higher authority such as your supervisor, and share your track record of prior conversations to show that you’ve been handling it like a grown-up and taking reasonable action. In her keynote speech to EWI members, Fawn Germer also said “Don’t avoid uncomfortable conversations. They take between five and fifteen minutes,” and often a lot less! Ultimately, a short, uncomfortable conversation can be far less stressful than working in a team where credit and praise are unfairly given and taken.  Jo is founding editor of  BeLeaderly.com.    A leading authority on women’s leadership,  Jo Miller  is a sought-after, dynamic, and engaging speaker, delivering more than 70 speaking presentations annually to audiences o f up to 1,200 women. This column was originally published on BeLeaderly.com.
